Why a studio needs a front door, and why this one is shaped like a photographic plate.

Astronomers call a telescope’s first real image first light. It is rarely a good image. The point is that the instrument works end to end — mirror, mount, camera, software — and that everything after it is refinement.

Why a plate

Merope is the sister with a story about dimming — not the faintest of the seven, which is a thing people repeat and get wrong, but the one who had a reason to be modest. She is also the star whose only claim on the nebula around her is that she happens to be lighting dust she did not make.
